The holiday season can be a time of joy and connection, but it can also bring its share of stress, overwhelming schedules, and heightened emotions. At Relationship Matters Therapy Centre, we recognize how challenging this time can be, especially if you're navigating difficult feelings or situations.
As we prepare for our winter closure (Dec. 22, 2024–Jan. 5, 2025), we want to equip you with tools and strategies to help you prioritize your mental well-being during this time when our therapists are unavailable.
Self-Care Strategies to "Make It Through" the Holidays
1. Stick to a Routine
The holidays can disrupt your usual schedule, but maintaining a sense of structure can help create stability. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same times, eat regular meals, and incorporate movement into your day.
2. Plan for Emotional Check-Ins
Take moments throughout the day to pause and ask yourself:
How am I feeling right now?
What do I need in this moment?
This mindful practice can help you address emotions before they become overwhelming.
3. Set Healthy Boundaries
Holiday gatherings can bring up challenging dynamics. It's okay to:
Say no to events that feel too draining.
Step outside for a breather if things feel tense.
Limit discussions on sensitive topics.
4. Create a “Holiday Toolbox”
Put together a list of activities and coping tools that help you feel grounded, such as:
Listening to calming music.
Journaling your thoughts.
Going for a walk to clear your mind.
Engaging in a hobby you enjoy.
5. Stay Connected
Even though we’ll be out of office, connection is still key. Reach out to trusted friends, family members, or community supports. Don’t hesitate to let loved ones know if you need their presence or a listening ear.
6. Practice Gratitude in Small Moments
When things feel overwhelming, focus on small things you’re grateful for. Whether it’s a warm drink, a kind word, or a quiet moment to yourself, acknowledging these can help shift your perspective.
What to Do if You’re Struggling
If you find yourself in emotional distress during our holiday closure, here are some resources to consider:
Local crisis support lines: Here 24 Seven in the Waterloo Region (1-844-437-3247), or call or text 988 Canada-wide.
Emergency services: Call 911 or visit your nearest hospital for immediate help.
Online or text-based support: Consider services like Talk Suicide Canada (1-833-456-4566) or other similar helplines available in your region.
You are not alone, and help is always available.
